Drew's Birthday Party

Drew's fifth birthday bash was Saturday (his actual birthday is Setember 2). We had a lot of people to celebrate. Cousins Hannah and Colin came, as did school friends L.J. and Kaitlyn. We were also pleasantly surprised that Drew's Great Uncle Randy and Great Aunt Linda and Lucas and Lesley could come. The kids all had fun playing. We grilled out for lunch and ate cake.

Drew has been very excited about his star birthday cake that he picked out. He even helped me make the cake and do the decorations.

After the party most of us went to Aunt Anita's neighborhood pool and we swam and sped down the water slide. It was a blast.

That night Drew, Papa, Uncle Bee, Andy and I went to the sprint car races. Mirra stayed home with both Grandmas. It was great to see Drew at the races. He is more attentive than I have ever seen him. He watches the cars and notes who wins. He is REALLY interested in it. After the races the track put on a nice fireworks show. We told Drew it was a special birthday treat for him. I know, we're stinkers. It backfired though. It was the closest we had ever been to fireworks in our lives and the close proximity unnerved Drew a bit.

Overall it was a very fun and eventful day.

Thanks to everyone for their presents and, most especially, their presence. And a special thanks to my parents and Andy's mom for all their help with the house and the party and the kids. All the things they do, unasked, are greatly appreciated and really made the day enjoyable for us all. We love you!

Back To School

This was Drew's first week of preschool. I'm a little sad to see the unofficial end of summer, but a little relieved that I may get more done around the house (like getting ready for Drew's birthday party next Saturday).

Drew is going to attend 2 different preschools this year. He started his new one this week on Tuesday and Thursday. We chose to put him in this additional preschool to help him get used to a larger classroom size, longer day(prep for Kindergarten)and it also takes place in a gym with 45+ minutes of gymnastics. Our thought is that the gym exercise will address his need to be active in the winter and in turn help him stay focused on school. We have noticed in winters past that his attention span and cooperation level go down in winter when he is less active. We will see how that plays out.

His other preschool, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, is the same he has been attending for the last 2 years and is associated with his school district. He knows his teacher (she is awesome!) and has friends in his class that he will attend elementary school with. The difference this year is that they moved the preschool from one elementary school to the other in the district which is an addiditonal 10 minutes away from our house. We have been to the classroom a couple of times now and Drew seems unfazed by the change there.

To try to reduce confusion we call the first one "gym" and the second one "school".

In September, Mirra will start a Mom's Morning Out program that she will attend during the school year. It meets every Thursday. The social experience will be good for her and the break from me will be good for us both (grin). I will have a 3 hour window each week in which I can set appointments, run errands, or hide in Starbucks with a good book if I choose.

So the kids are all squared away. But now we have 3 different snack schedules, permission slips and field trips, 3 different fund raisers, 2 different classroom volunteer schedules, 2 different school holiday schedules, 3 sets of policies and procedures, 3 open houses, and transportation for all. My head is swimming. I know in three to four weeks I will have it all down but at times all these little details are a bit overwhelming.

We went to Drew's second open house at "school" on Thursday night. Mirra and Drew had fun playing with Lilly, who is his teacher's daughter and about 7 weeks younger than JJ. They were all so cute playing around the classroom and having a snack together.

Mirra signs "milk" but is really telling Papa to give her more cake. Quite a demanding little dame.

Yadda, yadda, yadda

I know this post will jinx her progress, but it seems that Miss Mirrabella is starting to talk. Last week at my parents' she signed "more." Later that night she pointed to the sky and said "up." She signed "eat" when I showed her that the fish in the pond were eating. At our neighbors' she said "kee cat"....kitty cat. I went to Drew's classroom to help with set-up and Mirra was signing "more" and "eat" independently to his teacher. Then today she signed "bird". A very refreshing development since she seemed to have clamed up for the last couple of weeks.

Well... We Tried

Time for more quality family time. The plan: a one-day trip to Cincinnati to watch Mirra's first Cardinal game, stay overnight, and swim in the hotel pool.

Great in theory, but in reality we overestimated Mirra's tolerance for a change in routine.

First, we time the two-hour drive for Mirra's naptime. We think she will sleep in the car then be ready for a longer night. Both kids fell asleep 30 minutes from our destination. Not the 1.5-2 hour nap we anticipated. We check into the hotel and go to the pool. In Drew's words: "The water is cold." He still splashes around and has a good time. I should tell you that Drew adapts very well to hotel life with the pools and elevators and the poeple. He was so excited and friendly upon our arrival that the hotel staff wanted to hire him and predicted he would be successful in the hospitality field.

So then we try to get the kids to lay down for a little bit before leaving for the game. They had other ideas, like climbing around and jumping on the beds. So onward to The Great American Ballpark we go. Dave, we were thinking of you! We park and stop for dinner on our walk to the park. The park is great. It has a lot of character and the prices were reasonable for a professional game. The view of the Ohio River from the stands is awesome.

Drew loved it and got excited about watching the Cardinals. He danced in the aisles and really liked the eye candy. He could not have been better behaved. I was so proud. Mirra......is a toddler. She didn't want to sit. We could only get her to sit for a 1/2 inning at a time. We thought that wouldn't be a problem if we could let her wander up and down a desserted aisle (we had used this strategy in Milwaukee with Drew when he was the same age). However, the stands here were steep and narrow and not a safe place to let her walk. We ended up taking turns walking with her in the corridor. What interested her were the people. She has no stranger-danger. She very smoothly walks up to people, stares at them, and gives her little royal wave.

We finally left after the 5th. That turned out OK since no one scored after that point. So we saw 4 Cardinal home runs (two from The Great Pujols) and two homers from the Reds so Drew saw fireworks, too.

Now, this is where it gets nutty. As we are walking back to our car, which is only about 3 blocks from the stadium, a guy stops us and says "You don't want to go that way." We look down the road and there is a mob of people spilling over into the street from the sidewalk. We hear from a woman passing by that there are kids "jumping" other people. This group of hundreds is blocking the only route to our car. So a group of us head up to a pedestrian overpass where we can see what is going on. After a few minutes the police come and the crowd disperses. We waited a bit longer and head to the car with another guy who happened to be parked by us. We made it to the car safely and got the heck out of there, taking a detour through Kentucky to avoid any more trouble.

We finally make it back to the hotel and get the kids in their PJs. The problem is that Mirra had no intention of going to sleep in her pack & play. She wouldn't even lie down next to one of us and relax. Drew, meanwhile, is snuggled up and doing his best to go to sleep in spite of Mirra's objections. Ironically, Mirra is usually very easy to get to sleep at home. Finally we decide we won't make any progress and we pack up and head home at 11:15 p.m. The kids were asleep soon after our departure and they went straight to bed and slept when we got home.

On a positive note, our early arrival home allowed us to see the two baby dear investigating our yard this morning.

So after this little adventure we are reconsidering how we will travel with the Little Princess in the near future....and we don't plan to go back to Cinci anytime soon. Maybe when Mirra is 4 we will take out a loan and go to the new Busch;)

Drewisms

We went by the hospital where Mirra was born the other day. Drew says "Get a baby brother. Get a baby sister."

I told him yes, that is where we got baby Mirra but we were not going to get any more babies.

"My favorite color is orange sucker."

Drew had a hard time falling asleep one night so he got a story from Aunt Anita while Mommy helped Mirra.

Drew really liked my birthday cake.
