The Tales We Tell

The life of a fish is not a long one. We have lost many in the five months Drew's tank has been up and running. Fortunately, Drew seems to accept it when we tell him that a fish has gone to heaven. However, we started feeling bad telling him this every two weeks or so. So we started replacing every other one.

A couple of months ago we added Molly, the algae-eating plecostamus, to Drew's tank. After a few weeks, Molly departed our company. Quite some time had passed before Drew started asking where she was. I told him she was hiding in the tank. Molly had been very dark in color and often did camouflage herself against the black filter. I kept telling him this for a week before I managed to get a replacement.

Then yesterday, Mr. Pettipaw, went belly up. Drew saw him upside-down and said "Mr. Pettipaw wants to swim." After Mr. Pettipaw had been flushed, Drew asked where he was. We told him that his fish had gone on vacation to Grammy's house for the night. I replaced the fancy-tailed goldfish today, though I know that Drew can tell the difference he still seems content with his little fish family.
